Kotor is a medieval town located on the bottom of the beautiful Adriatic coast. The well-preserved old town, adorned by Medieval architecture and numerous monuments of cultural heritage is just one of the reasons to come and see this special coastal city. History and culture of Kotor are very rich, since it was ruled by the Illyrians, Byzantines, Venetians, Austrians, French … Also this city is one of the best preserved medieval urban places in this part of the Mediterranean.
In Kotor one enters like in a fairy tale – through the main Sea gates or through North or South city gates. They all have their own stories of the Venetian superintendents, Turkish admirals, or unusual system of three bands gate. All this testifies about turbulent history of the city that today harmoniously and richly connects all the different architectural influences and cultural and historical traces.
Great, 4.5 km long, centuries-built stone walls protect the town on one side and the sea and two rivers on the other two sides. Walls are extending from the sea along the slopes of Mount St. Ivan to the fortress at the top. If you have a chance to stay here than you definitely should not miss climb to the top of the walls, with a total length of the main ascent of 1200 meters which is about 1350 stone steps.
If this is not enough for a research during a holiday, it is worth to know that Risan – the oldest town in Boka Bay, first time mentioned in the 3rd century BC, is certainly worth a visit, just like small, old fishing villages nearby – Perast, Orahovac, Moriva and Dobrota.
For the more active holiday, there are many sports clubs which offer entertainment on the water.
Sailing club “Lahor”, or diving association “Kotor” have instructors who are always available to visitors. The old town is a story for itself.
Restaurants and taverns that are serving freshly caught fish are everywhere, and those who like to party can find numerous nightspots, considering that the clubs and bars are among the best on the Montenegrin coast.
During the season the town organizes numerous carnivals. Some of them are Camelia festival, Fisherman night festival, International festival of a cappella and many others
During the summer many concerts are organized and are performed in a number of museums, old Kotor churches and concert halls. Very famous manifestation called Bokelj night, is certainly one of the most interesting for tourists because of good happy atmosphere and beautiful scenery, including decorated boats competing for the best decoration.
Because the number of sandy beaches is minimized, you can sunbathe and swim on several rocky beaches, mostly in front of the hotels. But if you insist of finding sandy beaches, there are two of them, with a very small capacity located in place Orahovac several kilometers away from the city center, towards Risan.
